New production by Mariame Clément.

The new staging will be directed by French director Mariame Clément whose productions are known for their wit, intelligence and musicality; a fitting combination for an opera that is both charming and subversive in its portrayal of social hierarchies.

Saul

Revival of Barrie Kosky’s sensational staging of Handel’s Saul

Barrie Kosky’s sensational staging of Handel’s Saul has travelled to opera houses all around the world since it premiered at Glyndebourne in 2015. Ten years on, Christopher Purves and Iestyn Davies, who starred in the original production, return to the roles of Saul and David, alongside Sarah Brady as Merab and Soraya Mafi as Michal. Early music specialist Jonathan Cohen conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

June: 8., 13., 17., 20., 22., 28.

July: 4., 6., 9., 12., 16., 19., 24.,

Falstaff

Revival of Richard Jones’s 2009 production of Falstaff

Richard Jones’s 2009 production of Falstaff  transforms Verdi’s Elizabethan comedy into a quick-footed post-war romp. Sian Edwards conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra and a cast that includes Renato Girolami as Falstaff, Anna Princeva as Alice Ford and Rodion Pogossov as Ford.

July: 13., 18., 23., 26., 29.

August: 1., 7., 11., 15., 19., 22., 24.

Káťa Kabanová

Revival of Damiano Michieletto’s intense 2021 production of Janáček’s Káťa Kabanová

Conductor Robin Ticciati reunites with Kateřina Kněžíková, who returns to the title role, and Nicky Spence, who performs the role of Boris following his appearance as Tichon in 2021. New to the cast are two eminent British singers with long-standing Glyndebourne connections – mezzo soprano Susan Bickley as Kabanicha and bass John Tomlinson as Dikój. Miles Mykkanen makes his Glyndebourne debut as Tichon.

August: 3., 6., 9., 12., 14., 17., 20., 23.

What is the dress code at the Glyndebourne Festival?

Glyndebourne festlich gekleidete Festivalbesucher
© Glyndebourne, Photography by James Bellorini

The official dress code is ‘formal evening dress’. For men, this means ‘black tie’ (black suit or dinner jacket with black bow tie) and a correspondingly elegant evening or cocktail dress (long or short) for the ladies. The ‘little black dress’ or a smart trouser suit are of course also suitable. This dress code is absolutely usual, but not mandatory. You will occasionally see men wearing a white dinner jacket and very rarely a tie. We recommend that ladies do not wear pumps, but flat shoes so you do not sink into the grass when strolling across the grounds.

Why is there a dress code?

The tradition of wearing festive evening dress when attending the Glyndebourne Festival can be traced back to its founder John Christie. He saw this as a way of showing the audience respect for the artists. Even today, Glyndebourne asks its visitors to wear festive evening dress, not only paying tribute to the artists, but also making a decisive contribution to the very special atmosphere of this opera festival.

Picnic - What if it rains?

If the weather is not quite as you wish it should be, don't worry,, you don't have to seek shelter under a tree or umbrella. In this case, your picnic table will be set up in a sheltered area under the arcades of the opera house before you arrive. Plastic covers will also be lowered to protect you from the wind and weather.

As the covered area is limited compared to the picnic area, we would like to note that in this case you may be seated in a somewhat crowded area. By the way, the atmosphere is generally not dampened - even when it rains. On the contrary, the fun-loving English love their picnics and don't let a bit of rain spoil their good mood.

Are there alternatives to the picnic?

If you don't trust the English weather or prefer a fine dinner in a restaurant, the elegant Middle & Over Wallop Restaurant offers a very good alternative.

How long does the long performance interval last?

The famous long performance interval after the 1st or 2nd act lasts approx. 90 minutes

Is Glyndebourne suitable for people with reduced mobility?

In principle, yes!

Please check with us before booking what requirements we need to take into account when organising your visit. Glyndebourne has a team of assistants who will make your visit as easy and enjoyable as possible. For example, you can be collected from the car park and driven to the Opera House in a golf buggy. Although most seats in the auditorium are accessed via several flights of stairs, we can arrange seats for you where this is not necessary. Easy access to the restaurants and toilets is also guaranteed.

Is taking photos allowed?

Photography and the use of recording devices is prohibited in the auditorium - even after the performance.

Is smoking permitted?

Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is prohibited in every building, including the Long Bar and terraces.

Are there changing facilities?

There are on-site changing facilities, located in the Plashett building at the foot of the car park

Can I bring my dog with me?

With the exception of guide dogs or dogs for the deaf, no dogs may be brought onto the site. For the welfare of the dogs, it is also not permitted to leave them in the vehicle in the car park.  Guide dogs and dogs for the deaf may of course be taken into the auditorium.

Glyndebourne: Is it worth a visit?

The Christie family's country estate in southern England …

… becomes a Mecca for opera lovers every year between May and August, as this pearl among festivals guarantees performances of outstanding quality, masterful productions, top-class artists and enjoyable intervals. The performances begin in the afternoon and are split up by extended performance intervals, during which numerous visitors picnic in the beautifully landscaped park in fine evening attire. The camping tables they bring with them are festively and lovingly laid as if there were an award for the most beautiful picnic arrangement. In this way, the opera interval becomes part of the production - perhaps even the most important one for some.

You should experience this spectacle at least once, or even better, have done it yourself. We will organise a (camping) table draped with a white tablecloth, chairs and a delicious picnic, with champagne, of course. If you don't trust the English weather, the exquisite Middle & Over Wallop Restaurant offers a good alternative.
